                                                                              Pyay and Its Environment
  Pyay
  Located 285km north –west of Yangon, Pyay is easily accessible by road
  or rail and a gateway city to the Rakhine State, across the Ayeyarwaddy
  River.
 It is one of the tourist sites and visiting spots worth-while bestowed upon
 the glory of ancient Pyu city Tharekhittra (Srikshetra). It is now located on
  the eastern bank of Ayerawaddy river, it is lied some 180 miles to the
  north-west of yangon and easily accessed by means of motor-road,
  rail-way and water-way. Pyay is highly regarded as the legendary place
  and historic golden land for Myanmar Buddhists then the grand
  archaeological sites, hospitality natives and enjoyable gardens for
  international travelers.
     • The Shwesandaw Pagoda
        In Pyay, the most venerated pagoda and the largest one is nothing else that the grand
  Shwe-san-daw pagoda. Apart from the main stupa, no visitor should miss but study the three
  lithic inscriptions of King Kyansittha as they are the earliest concrete evidence to prove the
  histotical back-ground of Shwe-san-daw pagoda.

     • Maung Me-Gaung’ Cave

        These feet-marks and the temple caold be seen between the eastern covered stair-way (Monday post ) and Tuesday
 corner (south-east ) on the pagoda plat-form of Shwe-san-daw.

     
• Duttabaung’s bell

        The interesting bell is known as Duttabaung’s bell with some inscriptions.

    
 • Hse-htat-gyi Paya

        Another visiting site in the immense Buddha image known as Hse-htat-gyi Paya. The Buddha-image itself is known for the
 tallest of its type and in well proportion structure.

     • Tharekhittra ancient City
      Ancient capital of a Pyu Kingdom, which flourished between the 5th and  9th Century. Thayekhittaya is located 8km south-
 east of Pyay (Prome),
 and Hmawza village is now standing at the centre of that ancient city. There is no doubt to the fine-arts
 of Pyus bestowed upon the remains and excavation findings, silver smithery, gold-smithery, bronze smithery, glass industry
 and so on.

     
• Tharekhittra Museum at Hmawza
        Tharekhittra Museum is consisted of three halls, and of one storey building in the shape of English alpha “U”, many
 interesting objects will narrat the grand culture of Pyu about 2000 years ago, if someone gets to drop in the tharekhittra
 Museum at Hmawza village of Pyay.

     • Bebegyi Pagoda
        Be Be tample is lied between the Baw Baw Gyi stupa and Laymyethnar temple just outside the southern city-wall, a
 protype for later Bagan.

     • Payagyi ( The Great Stupa )
        It is now located just outside the city-wall to the north-west of Therakhittra ancient city, datable to later phase of 6-7
 century A.D, as the oldest stupa of the vincinity.

     • Lemyethna Temple
        It is also located out the city wall of southern face and a little far off the Be Be temple. It is in square ground plan and
 having four entrances, only the stone-slabs of southern and northern faces could be enjoyed.

     • Payama Stupas
        It is one of the oldest stupas in Myanmar and now located just by the road led to Paungtale and outside of old Tharekhittra.
 Payamar is closed similar to Payagyi as the high concial dome is resting on a series of slight terraces and crowned by an
 umbrella.

     • Mingyi Hill
        It is the best place to take photos on newly built Nawaday bridge, Ayerawaddy river, Po U hill on the opposite bank and
 enjoy the sunset. The Buddha-images and other statues; just like, the hermit, Baidaryi and disciples, reflect themselves in very
 modern.

     • Po-U Taung
        It is lied on the west bank of Ayerawaddy river and just across Pyay. Po U Taung itself is really peacefully and covered
 with shady trees, including of mustard apples.
     • Bawbawgyi Pagoda
        Among the religious monuments, Baw Baw Gyi is the oldest, located just outside
the city wall of the southern face. Be Be temple is a retangular shape in ground plan,
there is no elaborated ornaments and stucco-carving.
          Sein Yay Forest Camp
      About one & half hour drive to Sein Yay village from Taungoo. It is the
 home of best teak, and the topography of Bago Yoma (Bago mountain
 ranges) is a place of genuine beauty. Working elephants can be seen in
 the forest.

      Akauktaung – Akauktaung Mountain
       Stands on the bank of Ayeyarwaddy River to the north of Pyay in Bago
 Division. It takes 15minutes by boat ride to reach the Akauktaung. Different   sizes and styles of Buddha images are caved into the wall of the bank and   the visitor can climb and visit the Akauktaung Pagoda, which lies at the top
  of the bank.
